Obesity is one of the most alarming health issues in the 'baby boomer' generation in the USA. A baby boomer is a person who was born during the period of baby boom that is between 1946 and 1965, after the end of the Second World War.
A poll carried out by 'Life Goes Strong' has thrown light on one of the very critical health issues. While approximately 36% of the baby boomers are obese, only about 25% of the people in two generations directly above and below them are obese. The poll also revealed that even amongst the baby boomers that that were not obese, a substantial portion of them were overweight, which only increases the already burdened health issues addressing machinery.
Experts have cautioned that if the present levels of obesity/overweight coupled with physical inactivity continued among the baby boomers, there will be a rise in their medical costs due to illnesses related to obesity, and their health issues will worsen.
Such health issues are giving the policy makers sleepless nights, and some serious measures need to be adopted.

The health officials of Virginia have issued some health tips to help people avoid problems during the extreme heat conditions.
People who are especially vulnerable to illnesses related to heat are the ones who are very young or very old, the ones with disabilities or chronic diseases, and the ones under alcohol or drug influence.
The officials have issued the following health tips –
The outdoor work should be scheduled during the coolest parts of the day, which is before 10 am or after 4 pm.
Take a shower or be in an air conditioned area, especially when the temperature reaches the upper 90s or above, since in such temperatures, a fan may not prevent heat related illnesses.
One of the very important health tips is to drink a lot of cool fluids, two to four glasses every hour should be consumed. A doctor should be consulted first, if you are on a fluid restricted diet.
Avoid sun burn and wear light clothing. Also, use sun screen, and a hat.
If you are working outdoors, adopt the 'buddy system', that is, make sure that someone else knows of your plans.
The above mentioned health tips are only recommendations. Please consult your doctor or trainer and exercise caution before implementing any of them. Visit www.vdh.virginia.gov for more information and health tips.
