Menstrual disorders vary from absence of menstruation to abnormal bleeding to other conditions associated with menstruation.
Some menstrual irregularities are:
- Amenorrhoea. Absence of menstruation is called amenorrhoea. There are two types of amenorrhoea: (1) primary amenorrhoea - when the menstruation does not start by sixteen years of age; and (2) secondary amenorrhoea - when a woman with regular menstrual cycles does not have menstruation for three or more months.
- Post menopausal bleeding. Menopause is the stage when a woman stops menstruating. Most women have menopause by the age of forty-five to fifty years. Menstruation more than twelve months after the last bleeding in the menopausal age is called post menopausal bleeding.
- Breakthrough bleeding. Any bleeding between the menstrual cycle is called breakthrough bleeding. It is a side-effect of oral contraceptive pills experienced by some women.
- Dysmenorrhoea. Pain or painful cramps in the abdomen just before or during menstruation is called dysmenorrhoea.
- Premenstrual Syndrome. This is a group of symptoms such as nervous tension, irritability, weight gain, headache, etc., during the last few days of a menstrual cycle.
