What is the role of estrogen and progesterone in the body?
Estrogen plays a very important role in your body and prepares it for feminine functions such as pregnancy and childbirth. Estrogen and progesterone together regulate the menstrual cycle and the changes that take place in the uterus in preparation for a pregnancy. About ninety per cent of the total estrogen in the body is produced by the ovaries. The remaining amount is produced by other glands such as the liver, adrenal glands, and the kidneys. Adrenal glands are secretory organs located on top of each kidney. They produce several hormones, one of which is converted into estrogen in the liver. Fat cells can also make small amounts of estrogen. This is why obese women tend to have less severe symptoms of menopause. However, since obesity is associated with several other health problems, especially heart diseases, you need to maintain a normal body weight.
Estrogen stimulates the growth of bones and maintains their normal structure and functions. It also increases the amount of good cholesterol and decreases the amount of bad cholesterol in the blood, thereby protecting the heart and the blood vessels.
Progesterone is mainly produced by the ovaries. The adrenal glands produce it in small amounts. It stimulates the growth of the inner lining’ of the uterus and makes it like a soft cushion where the fertilised and develop into a baby. Proesterone plays a very important role in maintaining normal pregnancy.
