What is the effect of menopause on heart diseases?
Posted on May 8th, 2007 by admin
The risk of heart diseases rapidly increases in women after menopause. The risk is more if you have one or more of the following associated risk factors:
- Obesity;
- High blood pressure;
- Cigarette smoking;
- Sedentary lifestyle;
- High levels of bad cholesterol in the blood; and
- Diabetes.
As mentioned earlier, the levels of estrogen and progesterone are different before puberty, during reproductive age and after menopause. These changes in the hormone levels affect different organs of the body such as heart and blood vessels in different ways. Some of these affects can either reduce or increase the risk of heart diseases.
