Reasons As To Why Pregnant Women Should Not Smoke: Study

Pregnant women need to take special care. According to national data, a lot of pregnant women smoke these days i.e. around 12% to 24% of pregnant women continue to smoke. According to a new study done by Loma Linda University School of Medicine, nicotine may be associated with the increasing blood pressure among kids as they grow.
This study was done on rat fetuses and these pregnant rats (12of them) were a daily dose of intravenous nicotine and 13 different pregnant rats were given a saline placebo. Then the rat babies were monitored for five months for heart damage signs. After 5 months it was seen that the baby rats had a heart risk- increased oxidative stress and hypertension. This research was done by DaLiao Xiao, the assistant research professor at the University. This shows that the hearts of babies are at risk, i.e. the babies who are born to pregnant women who smoke.
Though people do not behave the same way as rats; they are researched upon. But the nicotine shots would affect the same way nicotine does through smoking, nicotine gums or patches. Pregnant women should not smoke if they do not want cardiovascular problems in their children.
