Healthy Food A Key to Fight Obesity

Healthy Food A Key to Fight Obesity

A new fund has been set up by the California Endowment to make available healthy food to the areas of low-income. This lack of healthy food in these areas has been cited as the reason for obesity.
The not for profit group has now teamed up with Walmart, Walgreens and other retailers in an endeavor to establish more stores which would provide fresh and healthy food to these areas. The group has committed $200 million to the cause and they will get active support from Michelle Obama who wants to lower childhood obesity rates in these virtual 'food deserts' by establishing stores and supermarkets that provide healthy food. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has identified almost 24 million people living in such areas.
The San Diego County and the Oceanside comprise of almost 33,000 such people who find it very difficult to get access to fresh healthy food if they do not have a car. The fund will give short and long term loans to qualified retailers to invest in these areas.
