Reports based on a study at Oxford University have established that intake of B vitamins can delay the process of mental decay in the elderly. It has been experimented on volunteers with high levels of homocysteine, an amino acid, in the blood. However a generalization that B vitamins can slow down the progress of Dementia in patients is not possible at the moment as more trials are required as these were secondary outcome measures.
It is known that high levels of homocysteine in the blood the main ground for Alzheimer's can be controlled by intake of vitamin B 6 and vitamin B 12, the B vitamins, folic acid.
The result of the trials, which lasted over 2 years, was published in September 2010, in PLoS ONE. A group of 266 people aged 70 years and above, with mild cognitive impairment, that is memory disorders, were put on trial, on a daily dose of B vitamins. The results showed that there was marked improvement in the range of memory disorder tests performed on the experimented group undergoing the B vitamins treatment than those without it.
